TARA Goddess and the Wisdom of Each Menstrual Cycle

As a female-led business, bymne always wants to be a place and community for women to grow. We always want to create products that enhance feminine power in every woman. Thus, one of our newest product series inspirations is taken from Tārā; a great goddess of transformation.

Tārā is the great wisdom goddess, whose name means ‘star’. She is the protectress of navigation and earthly travel, as well as spiritual travel along the path to evolution, fulfillment and enlightenment. The siddhi (magical power) associated with Tārā is “of trust in change as a way to be carried through difficulty”.

The root syllable of Tārā’s name, tr, means to take across, and the feeling of her power is that it can carry us over and through challenge, but only if we give ourselves up to it. This is the central revelation of the siddhi of menstrual cycle awareness: if we honor and respect the forces of change that work within us through the menstrual cycle, then what we learn about this cycle carries us through the challenges of all other cycles of change.

Meeting the challenges of our experience of the menstrual cycle supports our capacity to embrace change in all other dimensions of our lives as they are connected.

Further, Tārā is the first transformation of Kālī, the primary manifestation of the force of change at work. The notion of transformation is central to the spiritualised understanding of the power of the menstrual cycle: for it is through an acceptance and understanding of the rhythms of our own monthly cycle that we can accept the transformative wisdom that each of these experiences has to offer us.

For to encounter menstrual cycles without awareness of the capacity for deep wisdom that resides within them becomes an experience of difficulty and challenge that seems to have no point, a focus of resentment, annoyance, embarrassment, and shame. This becomes the reason that we need to accept our menstrual cycle as it helps us to know more of the truth of ourselves.

As Dr Christiane Northrup writes, “The menstrual cycle is the most basic, earthy cycle we have. Our blood is our connection to the archetypal feminine. The macrocosmic cycles of nature, the waxing and waning, the ebb and flow of the tides, and the changes of the seasons, are reflected on a smaller scale in the menstrual cycle of the individual female body. The monthly ripening of an egg and subsequent pregnancy or release of menstrual blood mirror the process of creation as it occurs not only in nature, unconsciously, but in human endeavor. In many cultures, the menstrual cycle has been viewed as sacred.”

Aside from making us aware, our menstrual cycle can show us when we are living out of alignment with our truth. Menstruation consciousness as a spiritual practice that has different stages of the menstrual cycle is not meant to be the same.  Us, women, are cyclical in nature, like the moon, we have our own phases, and the more we are connected with our moon phases, the more connected we are with our truth and wisdom.

The Wisdom Within Each Menstrual Cycle

Rest (Early Follicular Phase):

During this menstruation phase, it is important to allow yourself to rest and take it easy. It is an opportune time for reflection, meditation, deeper intuition, and inspiration. Often our best ideas arise during this phase when we allow our days to be spacious and be gentle with ourselves. This phase represents an inward-looking time, perhaps more solitude. And so, if we are feeling low on energy, not sociable, not very talkative, and unable to focus at work, it is completely normal during this phase.

When we are experiencing period-related symptoms in your phase, give yourself permission to rest. It is also helpful to create a comforting environment with pillows, books, candles, herbal teas, and hot water bottles.  Based on the urge to create this comfortable space, we created the TARA Series; a series of PMS Care, Mastalgia Care, & Dysmenorrhea Care.

Rise (Late Follicular Phase):

By about Day 4 or 5, we may feel our energy increasing to being a little bit more active as we move “up” the cycle. Our inward energy during our menstruation phase changes into more outward energy during the pre-ovulation phase. With this increasing energy, it is a wonderful time to start a new project or to socialize more.

We can use this time to pursue a personal or work-related goal while our energy, stamina, and self-esteem are all on the up. We can also use this phase to design our workflows, write, set up work meetings, and catch up with friends.

Peak (Ovulation Phase):

Our energy levels are typically high during ovulation. For many women, this is an expressive time when you want to get out and see the world. Like the full moon, at a subconscious level, we are the most attractive, most “full of You” in this phase.

It is the time to let our full Self, shine! Plan social outings to connect with the people around you, let your voice be heard, and let your light be seen. It’s a good time to ask for that promotion, present at an important meeting, or make new connections.

Release (Luteal Phase):

During the Release phase, our body is preparing for our period, and energy levels are decreasing. It is usually a time when we are quite aggravated hormonally. We may be irritated a little easier and feel anxious and stressed.

It may be a time to consider the activities and interactions that have stressed us out over the last weeks, and ask ourselves, do we still want that in your life? Or do you want it to be different? This is generally a time of emotional volatility so we should press pause on the to-do list and try to prioritize self-care instead. Go for long walks or runs to work off any anxious energy.
